From my perspective, the need for a polarizer dropped precipitously
with the advent of digital processing. Darkening skys and dealing with
many kinds of reflections is quite easy in an image editor. For seeing
through the surface of water, or through a window with reflections on
it, there is still no substitute, though.

Here's a recent shot taken without a polarizer. It happens to be film,
as my DSLR is OT, but the same principles apply. I simply made a
separate sky layer and adjusted it. I used Curves, rather than levels or
something else, to also put a little more sparkle in the water while
darkening the sky. I went for a rather mild effect, as that's how I saw
the picture, but one can do differing amounts. The whole thing took 30,
maybe 45 seconds. The page is set up so Page Up and Page Down should
flip beween the two whole images

This seems to me to be a better solution for skies than a polarizer on
really wide lenses, where the polarizing effect can vary across the frame.

Maybe that will do you 'til some money is burning a hole in your pocket.
