Always a pleasure, Chris. ;^)

It's not too old a word.  Coleridge provides the oldest example in my OED 
(using your preferred spelling).  Must have been coined around 1800 or 
so.  It's an ugly word, really.  Good example why that great American, 
Winston Churchill, urged us to use good Anglo-Saxon words.
