... Because, to my understanding, you (probably) have an auto-focus eyeball
which will focus the aerial image wherever it may be.  The ground glass
screen "sets" the position of the image at the same optical position as the
film plane, enabling accurate focusing (in the absence of an A/M slider
switch on your temple).

But, if the camera's eyepiece is focused on the plane of the screen (as it
should be), if I remove the screen why wouldn't focusing the aerial image
using the lens also focus on the film plane.
