Ha!  I mentioned that to John at the time and he made a good point -
how would you have any confidence that the replacement would be any
better?

My main concern is that the meter is linear throughout its useable range.

FWIW, the late Fred Picker (Zone VI Studios in Vermont) really took
this on in even more detail and worked with a physicist to modify
certain models of meters.  Here's a quote from Donald Miller at
APUG.org:

"The Zone VI modifications that Fred Picker, along with Dr. Horowitz,
developed amounted to UV and IR filters, sharp cutting filters that
allow the meter to read colors more accurately (as they are read by
panchromatic film emulsions), and internal baffling to be resistant to
adjacent bright light sources."

I had a Pentax digital modifed by Zone VI and stupidly sold it years
ago.  It was very accurate and well suited to zone work.
