Their reach can be quite long indeed. Nova did a show on lightning a
few years back and followed a group of reseachers who had developed a series
of sensors that recorded lightening discharges across the entire US. They
then related the unfortunate story of a cyclist who was struck and killed by
lightning while sitting astride his bike in a park in Denver (I think).
There was not a cloud in sight. Since the date and time of the strike was
well documented, the researchers went back and looked at their data from
that time and found that the lethal bolt had originated from a thunderhead
some 15 miles away! Ouch!

Something like that can ruin your whole day!

Actually, it was a bit worse than that. He was off work for about three
months. And a word of warning to those (like me) who love to watch
thunderstorms. When the lightning struck, the sky overhead was fairly
clear. He had observed an approaching thunderstorm and paid it no
attention since he guessed it was still 3-5 miles away. Lightning
sometimes has a long reach.
