I use 1600 asa film, both color (Fuji) and B&W (Kodak) to photograph indoor
youth ice hockey and no flash. Both can be bought as C-41 type . Initially, I
used a flash, but the ref's and coached became slightly perturbed. I also use a
OM-4T(i) and a Tamron 180mm f2.5 and/or a Tamron 300mm. I also use a monopod.
The results are very good. I wouldn't bother with 800 asa at an ice arena due
to the lighting.
