I have some Hoya, Olympus, B+W and Heliopan filters. Optically, they all
seem very similar (except for multicoated filters). The Olympus filters
have a retaining ring that allows the filter glass to move so the glass
stays flat when the ring expands and contracts. I am not sure if this a
"real" benefit or not. Heliopan and B+W have brass rings versus
Olympus/Hoya aluminum, advantage? My reason for liking Oly filters: same
finish as the lens, marking on outside of ring (some B+W mark on the
inside), slim (although the new Heliopans have a standard slim mount that is
the same size), and inexpensive (sometimes).

BTW, I had a B+W MCR for my 18mm and it would flare when side lit like any
other filters and was pain to clean. I haven't tried Hoya or Heliopan
multicoated, because I am not sure they are worth the extra money. So, I
prefer hoods and use single coated (Oly? and Heliopans) only when I feel it
is necessary. I use Oly UVs for protection at the beach or when it's
raining or other times I might run into adverse conditions (close-ups of
boiling water, street riots, swamps, or German Shepards).

While we are on the subject, has anyone use Olympus A4 (81C) filters? I
have never seen any for sale and would like to try them. I like KR1.5s
shooting Provia when it is overcast or I'm in the shade and I think this
filter would be similar. Any sources?

And Hoya filters are made by Kood. Or is it the other way round?

John,

I seem to recall, I think, maybe, someone here, sometime or another, claimed
the Olympus filters were made by Hoya. I don't know.
