Mechanical means better low temperature reliability. Having never had an
issue with an OM in low temperatures, I think you really need to get
seriously cold before this becomes a proper advantage. Certainly colder than
I tend to get.
The shutter sounds nice, but an OM1 sounds nicer IMHO
The grey finish is truly marvellous. Looks nearly as good on the OM2000....

I guess you either want a mechanical camera or you don't. The real question
is what do you get as you increase your spend between an OM1 and an OM3 and
then onwards to a 3ti

OM1 to 3
Gain:
1/2000 shutter speed
spot metering
Wider ASA range
ability to use 2 series screen without "issues"
A TTL sync cord socket(but not ttl flash)
A permanent hot shoe that doesn't break
Easy battery availability
A proper battery check, albeit with a rather amateur implementation

Loss:
FP sync
Size (marginal)
Self - timer
Mirror lock up (marginal benefit)
That intangible smoothness in the controls of an OM1
Shutter doesn't sound quite so good (YMMV)
Chrome finish, so expensively "mint" or chipped black paint is the only
option.

OM3 to 3Ti
Gain:
The TTL socket does something (but not something very useful YMMV)
Super FP sync with F280
Screen 2-13 as standard
The paint finish, which is both nicer and more durable
A more professional implementation of the battery check

Loss:
More currency than the above justify.
Ability to actually find one to use.

IMHO both the 3 and 3Ti are just collectors items. When I fancy going
manual, it's a user condition OM1n that goes with me. Auto it's an OM4Ti.
Both 3 and 3Ti suffer from rarity value, so even a ratty example will cost
more than any benefit it brings in usability is worth. With the 3Ti this is
amplified enormously by its status as the last OM in the line, sold
originally at an outrageous price (IIRC Oly's "kill the OM system via
pricing" policy was in full swing when it was introduced)and whose target
market had pretty much evaporated by the time it arrived.

Julian

Who notwithstanding the above will make the obligatory "cold dead hands"
comment
