The contact spring is soldered to a black wire that runs into the battery
chamber from the side, not the top. If you remove the bottom cover (4
screws, no loose parts inside), the battery decal adhered to the inner side
of the battery chamber, and then the round decal with a hole in the middle
that is stuck to the bottom of the battery chamber, you will see how the
wire is routed down the side of the chamber and into the hole into which the
battery contact spring is pressed. Work the black wire out carefully and
re-solder the spring to it and push it back into the hole so that the wire
fits into the slot along the side and bottom of the chamber. If the wire
has been damaged and is shorter than necessary, you might have to solder a
jumper wire onto it -- just be careful that it can't short to anything
metal!

How to reach the other (not visible) side of the compartment and fix it?
