If it makes you feel a bit better, you are not the only one. My OM4,
bought new in Philly's Center City Camera somewhere around 1986,
worked fine for a few years, and suddenly around 1989 started locking
up and eating batteries. In early 1990 it got a full CLA through
Wolf's Photo in Atlanta (at the time I was living in Chattanooga).
When the camera came back, I asked the clerk "how do I know it is
fixed?". He pulled out a piece of masking tape, wrote down the days
date, and stuck it on the bottom plate - then took a double-height
alkaline battery out of the blister pack and put it in. He said "if it
dies in less than a couple of weeks, bring the camera back". So away I
went, thinking all was right, only to discover the battery was dead
and the camera locked up in just two days. I took a 3 year assignment
to Buenos Aires right after that, so I never had a chance to go back.
The camera ended up in storage in the US, and when I came back I put a
pair of LR44's in, with the same result. So back to the closet it
went...until about 2 months ago, after reading the battery tales of
woe from people in this list, I got a couple of 357 at the nearby WM,
stuck them in,,,and it came back to life!... and so far, so good,
still the same cells in, still working!....my poor camera, relegated
to a dark and dusty corner for 14 years, because of using the wrong
battery. Talk about a thick-headed owner!

It must be the Olympus equivalent of the "Count of Montecristo", and I
think that will be the OM4's new moniker....
