Automation = Aperture-preferred AE

Using the spot is best when the whole scene is not representative of the
suject, like a sunset or an irregularly-lit portrait. I've probably used the
highlight or shadow buttons about a dozen times each in the 20 years since I've
had OM4/4t's. But I have used the spot meter a lot for faces. What I
especially like to do is to do two-three spot meters of the face plus
mid-tones on the subject's clothes, then hit the AE-lock lever. That is what
I wish the E-1 had.

Be careful if your subject has very dark or light skin, as that will throw a
single reading way off. Also, many caucasian persons' skin is one zone
lighter than 18% and can mess up a spot reading. The way to learn is to take
an 18% gray card and an incident meter and do some experimentation with your
subject holding the card next to their face. You will find out pretty quick
how to use that spot meter. With AE turned on, it's harder to "open up one
stop", as you'll have to either shift to Manual exposure or turn the Exp-Comp
dial to +1.
