Addendum:
I got mixed up and forgot the whole question, so allow me to add the following:
the center post is in two sections, a short one at the top, as seen in the
pictures, which allows the tripod to sit right on the ground, and a longer
bottom part that, when screwed onto the top section, makes a full-length center
column. I'm not certain where the bottom part of mine is since I haven't used
it in years.
