The gun actually uses 6 AA size NiCd cells, pre-wired in the battery
holder. You *can* get the module apart (with some difficulty); note
how the cells are wired (using welded tags) together) and replace them
with new NiCd cells that must have the proper solder tags.

You can also get a battery holder that's designed to take 6 alkaline
AA cells, however you can't just replace them with NiCd's because this
battery holder is meant for a total voltage of 9V (not the 7.2V of the
NiCd pack). If you look into the bottom of the gun with the battery
holder removed, you will see that there are 3 contact pins; the
battery holders for the pre-wired NiCd cells make contact with
different pins from the '9V' holder.

I'm not sure what will happen if you put NiCd cells in the '9V' holder
- I've never had to try. But obviously the electronics of the gun get
a lower voltage so it might mean longer recycle times. Does anyone
know?

Metz has a comprehensive website (albeit not easy to navigate) in
German and English - might be worth a look!
