Winsor,
I think it may have been a bit more than a marketing ploy, at least
if you take at face value the info from the industry page devoted to Canola
oil. Selective breeding of the Rape plant by Canadian scientist came up with
a hybrid plant that is supposed to be more palatable, nutritious, etc. The
seeds are 40% oil so they make a boat load of the stuff. Canadian farmers
still grow a small quantity of Rape for Rapeseed oil which is mostly used in
industry as an environmentally-friendly lubricant.
On a side note, I came across a few Web pages that think Canola is
the most toxic stuff since ricin and should not be consumed by humans. Who
knows. As for me...the stuff is pretty tasteless. I prefer my oil from
olives.

Of course I was kidding. I thought the change of the name was one of
the dumber marketing ploys here. I checked my dictionary and evidently
rapeseed oil was a move to more gentility. It was originally just
called rape(a member of the mustard family) and the product was rape
oil(gasp!). The root is Greek and moved to Latin and then to middle
English in 1300-1400.
