No recent experience, I haven't used mine since yesterday afternoon :-) .

I have only a small kit of lenses, primarily zooms, and it's my 
favourite "walkaround" lens for street shooting. Heavy, yes, but easy 
to zoom and focus. For macro use, focuses down to about 10-15 cm in 
"normal" range, down to about 5 cm at 28. Zoom and focus on mine are 
smooth with no creep, except rather stiff in cold weather [ "cold" 
starts at about -10C for me :-) ]. Someone else will have to give you 
a technical evaluation, I don't pay so much attention to that.

I paid C$300 for mine a few years ago, condition 8+, here in Toronto.
