[OM] pentaprism foam on OM-1

hi,

i just read through
http://olympus.dementia.org/Hardware/tutorials/FoamRemoval/index.html
and have a short question: as i read the page, this foam isn't necessary
at all. is this true? and if yes, why was it installed in first place?
