How about the possibility that, unlike Nikon and Canon, Olympus has
released the beginnings of what is the first digital system camera -
with camera and lenses specifically designed to function together. The
lenses are specifically designed to eek out the best possible
performance from the specific sensor. This list doesn't suggest that
your Zuikos are somehow inferior - it only suggests that they will best
perform with this particular sensor if used within these f stop ranges.

Nikon and Canon did NOT - and still have NOT - designed cameras and
bodies specifically for each other. Instead, they took their existing
body line and adapted some bodies to carry sensors. For Nikon and Canon
to start acknowledging at some of their lenses will not perform
optimally on their digital bodies unless stopped down, is for Nikon and
Canon to acknowledge that do not have a digitally optimized system.

This doesn't mean that you won't get "acceptable" results with Nikon and
Canon lenses on their bodies, but it may help explain some of the
problems that have been reported, particularly with the wide angles.

And perhaps this also suggests that what some on this list have said was
just PR bull from Olympus about E-1 lens design, is in fact reasonably
accurate information.

This is fascinating. Olympus are really precisely specifying the focal
lengths and aperture ranges they consider could give acceptable
performance. (I never saw Nik or Can do anything like this for their
DSLRs
- but then I don't have a Nik or Can or a mailing list like this for
them.) They are almost banning small apertures.

Do you think Oly are hyper-careful or are Zuikos + the E-1 so much worse
than Nikkors or Cannons? Or maybe the E-1 CCD doesn't have the
micro-lenses that the Nik and Can sensors have - that could be it...?

For those who are interested, there is a listing of the compatible OM
lens and recommended aperature ranges (based on the calculations made by
Olympus spec) with the E-1 adapter. The list is located at:
