Use a long nut (maybe called 'coupler'?) on the tripod thread with a
machine screw threaded hook in the other end. An ordinary nut on the
threaded part of the hook can be used as a lock nut. These are all
standard hardware store items. If the verbal picture isn't enough, I can
post a pic. Cheap, quick and effective.
