The back latch on the 4/4t/et al, is lifted by a ring within the rewind
shaft's holder.  When you pull up on the rewind shaft, the lips on the
end of the fork on the rewind shaft pull this ring up, and the ring
lifts a tab on the back latch.  It's very easy for the tab of the back
latch to slip over this ring, especially if there's glue in the back
latch gumming things up <g>.  When this happens, pulling up on the
rewind shaft has no effect since the tab of the back latch has slipped
below the ring.

It this is the problem, it's a tricky fix, and not one easily described
or even demonstrated.  If you've got a "dead" 4 body, take the mechanism
apart and you'll see what's going on.
