It would seem to me that eBay have put restrictions on search terms to reduce 
the volume of results. 

I don't know what context you are using these terms in but for me I found I 
wanted to be get a broad result with a short name query (if that makes sense). 
But given that there several hundred thousand items on any given day it perhaps 
makes sense to limit wildcards and the like to reduce the load on their system.
