Well, I'll chime in with my understanding (which is probably wrong  8^> ).

Each Zuiko starts at an index serial number (which I was always under the 
impression was the number 100,000).  Thus, the first production model of (say) 
a 35/2 would be either serial number 100,000 or 100,001 (not sure which).  A 
40/2 can have an identical serial number to a 35/2 (or any other Zuiko) since 
they all start from an index number.  It's the serial number of the model, not 
of every different lens configuration in the OM System.  (Imagine what a 
nightmare of tracking *that* would be!)
