I'll try to retain some diplomacy here, or, rather, not
let unjustified cynical contempt get in the way of fairness.

On Yahoo and elsewhere, there are a quite few groups that
pertain to Olympus digital cameras. Being a new owner of
one, I've subscribed to a few.

Much of the questions and conversation being had would not
enhance your opinion of the photographic knowledge of the
majority of the dc-buying public. Many of the questions
about the "confusing" c5050z seem to indicate a complete
lack of understanding of basic photographic concepts and terms,
and become in their own obscure way a compliment to the camera
rather than an insult to its functionality (I daresay this
would apply to many such "prosumer" models of assorted makes).
The "confusion" arises out of the camera's expansion and
customisability away from the "point-and-shoot only"
limitation...at least that's the impression I get from their
praise for their old [insert earlier point-and-shoot
"consumer" model here]. I see them with an OM1 in their
hands, with a MiJ 50/1.8 attached, saying "This camera
is no damn good. All my photos come out over/under exposed
and blurry".

The camera seems to have been purchased because it's the "latest
and greatest" rather than that it might suit their needs. Perhaps
the, from what I understand, very worthy C50 would have met
their Olympus needs better, if whatever "old" model "p&s" *wasn't*
already meeting their needs.

Of course, I once owned a Ricoh Mirai as my one and only camera,
replacing a manual camera with assorted lenses with this point-and-
shoot wonder, so who am I to talk? Perhaps p&s is just a step on the
way to "photography" as an art or craft for some people.

I'll suffix my comments above by pointing out that in almost
every one of these groups there are people who have a very
educated understanding of photographic concepts and terms, and who
have been a help for me in applying their technical understanding
to the digital world. There are also some of those same folk I
mention as having limited photographic knowledge who seem to produce
work that I'd be very proud to have produced - they clearly have
an "eye" and I concede some jealousy of it, even if they might not
have much of the technical knowledge...but perhaps again,
that will come, if ever they see any necessity.

Just some thoughts. Are "shreddies" "Shredded Wheat"?

Cheers
Marc
