Likely situation?  The camera jammed (G's are known to do that) or the
batteries died and someone tried to "fix" it by forcing the mirror up or
down.  This broke the plastic post on the mirror frame that the lifting arm
uses to raise and lower the mirror.  Not a nice situation, but repairable
unless there's other significant damage.
