Semantically a good call Marc.  I had not made the connection before,
but "prove" and "probe" are indeed both derived from "probare" -
according to my Shorter Oxford.

...which is the origin of that oft-misused phrase "The
exception that proves the rule" (the word "prove", from Latin
"prob?re" originally meaning, I believe, simply "to test"
and not "to test as true". Similar to "probe").
