Hi All.

My bet is that it was caused by "out gassing" from a filter case or camera
case. 

I had a bunch of filters that were stored inside their cases, inside an air
conditioned room for about 10 years and EVERY one had a layer of "funk" on
them. I believe it was from the various foam linings in the filter cases.

My "funk" came off easily with lens cleaner... Did you try lens cleaner
before the soap?
