That's one case for shipping without insurance and trying to go around
customs. I have a local Leica dealer in NYC who ships everything
uninsured, worldwide. He has only had one missing shipment in the past 4
years. There's something to be said for the practice.
I often ship overseas without insurance and customs declaration if the
buyer wants it.

I have just been mugged by UK. customs :-( .Expected 135mm macro plus
vario tube arrived today. Cost $365 including insured post. Import duty,
VAT. and collection cost by parcelforce added £66.50 / $100 to the cost. I
hope the lens is as good as advertised. The added charges mean I would have
been better advised to buy in the UK from a dealer, with the security of
being able to easily send it back if it was "duff". Final irony....My
daughter did not have the cash handy, Parcelforce could not take Visa so the
parcel will have to be redelivered. I will think very carefully before
importing from the States again :-( Regards
