One advantage of soft rubber hoods is that you can roll back the edge for a 
wider angle. Now if we only had rectangular soft rubber hoods....

The most important bunch of light to keep out is the sun, or other major 
light source like a spotlight or the sky. Shooting from a shadow is better 
than from a sunlit place.

I wonder what the formula is for the ideal distance for the opening of a 
rectangular lens hood. I suppose the longest is best, but at what 
proportion of focal length does it really start to help?
