Hi Bernard,

I travelled through Guatemala for three weeks a couple of years ago, and
felt safe throughout. The usual advice is not to travel at night and
don't go unaccompanied to certain places like Cerro de la Cruz and the
cemetary in Antigua, Temple VI at Tikal, Zona 1 in Guatemala City,
Volcan Pacaya and some others. If you do have to travel at night only
go on good roads. Guatemala City to Tikal is a safe overnight journey.
In markets and crowded places keep a close hold on your stuff, and be
alert on bus journeys when your backpack will be stored on the roof.
Basically, be careful and vigilant, without being so paranoid it spoils
your trip, and you're very unlikely to have problems.

I really had a fantastic time in Guatemala. I think it may be my
favourite country of the 26 I've been to. My top recommendation is to
climb Volcan Santamaria and camp at the top - I can't tell you how
amazing that was! If you have time you might be interested in my photos
from the trip:

Can't help you on the camera question, except to say that if you've got
insurance I don't think I would worry too much about taking the OM-4.

Have a fantastic trip, and I hope you'll be putting some photos online
when you return!

Roger
