I was the first solo student on Hawks when they started as trainers
at RAF Valley in 1977. We used to do the A5 pass (near Llanberis):
we flew northwest along Llyn Ogwen until we came to the bend in the
valley and the road, rolled right through 135deg and pulled down the
valley floor, which had descended about 500ft, before rolling out
heading north. It was very exhilarating and not many fast jet
aircraft have the turning performance to do it!

I am glad that you did not need the rope in the end Donald ;-).

For unexpected shock value though I think it was FB-111, RAF Tornadoes and
Jags sneaking up on us on the peaks and ridges in North Wales that really
sent the heart rate up. Sometimes they seemed to be close enough to throw
things at them.

I know where you're coming from, Lee. Once when on the crux of Crackstone
Rib in Llanberis I was nearly shaken off the face by two (or was it three -
I didn't look very closely) Hawks banking through the Pass, about my hip
height and half a ropelength (at least it seemed like that) away.

That was the day I unclipped from the rope, but that's another story...

OM content - none. I hadn't bought my OM1n yet (1977).

Donald.
