"Doesn't color negative film have a contrast mask layer"

The orange mask isn't for contrast, but because it somehow makes printing
easier. Apparently, a color negative film without one is quite difficult to
print accurately.
But I do agree, a color negative is harder to evaluate. It should look more
dense than a B&W neg, even without allowing for the mask.
