I spent a year and a half in Alaska and found them particularly annoying. But in the cities and towns they were no big deal. When things are very dry I wouldn't expect to see many of them. But I do not like smearing myself with muck - or creams, sprays etc. So I prefer the nets and suitable clothing.

And I agree with Jim - West Nile is no joke - and anything else they might transmit. No ned for paranoia, but I am certainly going to make the effort to keep them off.

Cheers,
LEE

To be mosquitoe proof, cloth must be kept away from the skin or be of a very
tight weave such as rip-stop nylon. Their little proboscis will go right
through a loose weave material. If you rub your skin with a mixture of ashes
and mud they tend to leave you alone but so does everyone else.

    Wow.

This thread is nuts. I live in Timmins Ontario, check your maps. Its
right up there. I've even been to the James Bay Coast for a few weeks
during the summer. I'm sure that the mosqutios up here and on the coast
could eat up all their puny American cousins. Up here, in the land of swamp
and bog, only children and old folks wear insect repellant and its usual
Off! Skintastic, which contains no DEET. The rest of us tough it out for
the first few days of spring, until we become immune to the little buggers.
After that, one does not need to bother with bottles of sprays or mud and
ashes.
