Larry,
  First of all, all your statements are subjective - except the last of
course ! ;->  I have seen too many impressive pictures by list members
taken with this lens.  But mostly I didn't want a zoom lens (subjective
by me).
  I think that the 300 is ideal for what I want to do with it, shoot
from my back deck across about 60 feet of yard into my woods which backs
my back yard.
