The 28-85mm Tokina ought to be of great general utility up in the mountains (and other places).

If I were gearing up for a climb (or just a hike or scramble), a zoom in that range, a body, some filters etc would be my choice for a light kit. Either that or a 35mm and 85mm (or perhaps 100mm or 135mm) prime lens combo.

Mine at the moment is going to be the 35mm/f2 - plus my "Zuiko" 70-210. Now; if I could only trip over a mint 35-80mm/f2.8 at a garage sale for $100.00 ......

Cheers
Lee

Subject: [OM] Kit for son-in-law

Last year about this time my future son-in-law came to visit and while my
daughter (his intended) and my wife went to a party, he and I went out to do
a little photography. He was outfitted with one of my OM 2s with a Tamron
60-300 zoom and I carried a bit more of a kit. He enjoyed the zoom and gave
my OM 2S with 18mm a try. He has mentioned his interest in the 18mm a time
or two. He is one who enjoys travel, mountain climbing and has a great eye
for photographs. Currently he has an Olympus 35mm Stylus zoom of some sort or
the other. The images he captures really are quite good. In come the
father-in-law (that's me) and I plan to fix him up with an Olympus kit. Here
is what I'm planning on giving him:
Olympus OM G with 50mm f1.4 Zuiko
17mm Tamron SP 17 mm f3.5
28-85 Tokina AT-X f3.5 - f4.5 (macro focusing)
60-300 mm Tamron SP f3.8 - f5.4 (macro focusing)
I'll throw in a few filters, probably a T-20 flash and a case.
So what do you think other than the obvious of most of the lenses not being
Zuikos? Is there anything else that I'm missing. All but the 60-300 would
probably be small enough for carry on a climb (not at the same time). For
those who think this would be a good kit, the answer is "Both my daughters
are happily married and I have no interest in adopting any more children".
