In the August 1978 Modern Photography, Herbert Keppler wrote the
following about the OM-2 in a comparison article with the Canon
A1:

"The Olympus OM-2 needs not stripping of fantastic conveniences,
since it has none..."

"The Olumpus 310 is the most complicated flash unit to
understand, with a nearly unfathomable instruction book..."

"Convenience? [The Canon] A1 is light years ahead of Olympus..."

"Again, we have photographic utility on the side of Olympus and
convenience on the side of Canon. It's interesting to note that
of all cameras having fully-coupled flash, all others have opted
for the convenience method--Fuji, nikon, Minolta--even though
the very system used by Olympus was developed by Minolta."

"The controls of the Olympus are of spartan simplicity. There is
not one which could be called merely a convenience. The controls
of the Canon A1 are multifarious and bent on offering the user
every convenience possible."

Folks, this was 1978!
