Jon,

it may be the actual contact points in the body which the Hot Shoe connects.

These may be dirty, therefore resisting the proper electrical throughput which 
should be occuring. Therefore they need to be cleaned. Conversely, they may 
need replacing or it may be a circuitory problem in the 2n.
