They still are. As are non-turbo Carrera 4s. Subaru WRX also comes
quickly to mind at the more economical end of things. Then there are of
course my beloved quattros. Oh, and BMW is trying this AWD thing a
second time--this time doing it the, cough, right way by copying the
quattro system pretty much.

If pockets were deep our Volvo 850t (problem child) wagon would be gone
so quick in favor of an allroad or S6 Avant--but I have to wait 'till
they're at least 8-10 years old before I can afford any cars I like.

I think what Mr. Silver meant was a 4wd capable of going off road and a
sports car in a different chassis (i.e. two cars). Much as I love the
allroad, a two ton station wagon is not a sports car.
