I remember from the seventies, however unlikely that may seem, that this was
a big thing. The New york discount stores were just getting a national
presence, and there were still quite a few neighborhood camera stores.
Remember inflation? It was really getting legs, a friend actually bought a
house with an 18% morgage. Camera prices were going up as well. for many,
the answer was a camera dealer in Hong Kong. The big item? The Nikkormat
FTN. In its day, it was quite a camera.

The importer, Ehrenreich, was, understandably unhappy, as he had built the
Nikon brand in the USA from almost nothing to the top, almost
singlehandedly. He was vigilent in protecting his wares. One action was to
constantly remind the Customs Service about their job.

The resuly was some creativity on the part of Hong Kong camera. Often, just
a bit of electrical tape was applied over the nameplate! Evidently, this was
sufficient. When you see a Nikomat in a used case at your camera store, this
is the result!
