Stulik, the Getty senior scientist, said he fears the days of traditional,
nondigital photography are numbered, making the need to understand its
chemistry - from Niepce to Polaroid - all the more pressing.

Ultimately, he said, advances in digital photography may do for its chemical
counterpart what the printing press did to the handwritten manuscript in the
1400s.

''It ended it,'' Stulik said.

Indeed a very interesting article, George! But the last two paragraphs only
repeat one of the myths of progress (like the myth of the paperless office).

I doubt the myth that printing press ended the handwritten manuscript.
Today, in every corner of the world, people rely on handwritten manuscripts
in all forms between scribble and calligraphy and the number of humans being
able to read and write ist still growing. IMHO the printing press has not
ended but rather multiplied the use of paper and pen!
