I bet there weren't too many other tourists about then! People seem
only to have realised in recent years that there's a country out there
in the North Atlantic. Nowadays I would wager that Iceland features in
at least one UK newspaper travel section every single weekend. The Blue
Lagoon is ubiquitous!

There were some...but not too many :) They had 150 km of tar road. They had *one tv program, which was off on thursdays - but: Thursday was cinema - day :) We swam in a hot spring near Myvatn which has about 90° centigrade now (there was a little volcanic outbreak around in the eighties I think).
We flew to Akureyri though :)
The car I rented was quite a specimen. Would react to the steering only after 90° turn...

Your site inspired me to have a look at my oldest (eldest?) slides - from a 1978 youth orchestra tour to south east asia, where I bought my first OM2 ... I find I still sort of have the same favorite motives..(a lonely child, clouds and part of the aircraft wing I'm sitting in, the graphic design of lots of sailing boats in the harbour..funny.

cheers
Doro
