The recent experience with Cosina has been that the boss is a Leica/manual
photography nut and prepared to do some remarkable things. (Shades of
Maitani?) The Heliar M mount collapsible lens on the special edition
Voigtlander Bessa T sets has a run of just 20,000 and the existing CosVoigt
users and some Leicanuts are getting twitchy wanting to buy one without the
body. The new Voigtlander lenses made in Nikon/Contax rangefinder mount
were very short runs indeed and there were some short run accessories of
enormous interest, such as an angle viewfinder for the Hassleblad Wide
outfit. The 12mm rectilinear is just astonishing for the price.
Cosina have virtually created a new market with the rangefinder gear,
mostly for the lenses, and have increased their market status and image
significantly in the process. I can't image that they've made much profit
out of it but there's more to it than that. They can now claim to be a
quality manufacturer. I would think that Cosina might be quite responsive
to pressure from Oly users for a new, better body and might even knock out
some quality lenses like the 125mm macro in Oly mount - and it could be
Olympus themselves that would be the stumbling block. Perhaps Cosina could
buy the OM tooling but would we buy an Coslympus OM5? :)
