Wide range zooms have got much better over the last ten years; Tamron now
have a 28-300mm autofocus zoom that is reputed to be good. If you are
looking at Tamron 28-200mm f3.8-5.6 manual zooms, note that there are two
models, nr. 71A made from 1994-98, and 171A made from 1998 until the
present. The 171A focusses much closer (to 80cm), whilst the 71A closest
focus is 210cm. That can be too far (it is for me). Closest focus is a
problem on most of the older wide-range zooms, not just Tamron. So go for
the 171A if you really need one.
Another problem with zooms that start at 28mm, or wider, is that it usually
means a large diameter front element. If you want compact lenses, start the
zoom at 35mm, and buy a 24mm or 28mm prime as well.

Sincerely,
Roger Key

Tamron apparently has a zoom lens that will go from 28
to 200 mm. Yikes!

It seems I heard once not to get a zoom where the top
end was more then double the bottom (or something like
that.)

Did something change? Is there some new design
technique that allows for this kind of thing?

I also saw a Vivatar for the same range.

Is anybody familiar with these lenses? Any comments?

Thanks!
