(Hoping I don't start the platform wars again...)  If you use Linux,
then the Gimp is free and very powerful image editing software, very
much like photoshop.  If you don't use Linux I'd urge you to give it a
go - recent distributions, for instance Mandrake 8.1, are very easy to
install, very very very stable (haven't rebooted my machine for 44
days), and there's lots of quality software for them.  For a while I was
not 100onvinced about Linux but I'm a convert now, and I'm working to
eradicate all trace of 'other' operating systems from my machine!
