I am new to this list. Just signed up today.
I am interested in finally breaking down and purchasing a digital camera.
My main intended use is for the outdoors to take pictures during my
backpacking and hunting trips. Would like to take pictures of flowers,
scenery, people, deer and elk.
I am a HAM radio operator (KB7UVC) and one of the APRS enthusiasts. So
weight is a big consideration. I carry a hand held radio with TNC and GPS
with me at all times. That means lots of extra batteries and lots of extra
weight. I need to keep weight to a minimum.
My requirements are as follows:
1. Would like greater than 3 mega-pixles. (2 as absolute minimum)
2. Must have an optical zoom of at least 3x. Prefer 4x to 10x.
3. Must use AA penlight batteries for interchangeability with GPS
and
radios.
4. Must be small enough to fit in my coat pocket and light weight
(< 1
lbs.).
5. Would like to have image stabilization for hand held
capabilities while
zooming out.
6. Estimated price range from $400 to $700.
7. It must be power efficient and be capable of taking many
pictures on one
set of batteries.
>From the limited research I have done on the web, the Olympus C-700 sounded
to be acceptable until I read the report on its poor picture quality since
it did not have image stabilization. I bought one of the original Olympus
auto zoom cameras (Infinity Super Zoom 300) many years ago and still use it
as my primary camera.
Would appreciate your recommendations as to which camera would best fill my
requirements and also which ones to avoid.
