It *might* be the ASA resistor that lives under the film speed dial.
If the wiper contacts become poor or intermittent, it thinks the film
speed is "0 ASA" and tries to hold the shutter open for ages in auto
mode. It's the OTF real time shutter control that's doing this - the
indicated speed looks quite normal because the metering is entirely
separate from the shutter control. Because it only happens in auto, it
*cannot* be a mechanical fault like a sticky magnet or sticky anything
else.

The dirty ASA resistor seems to be a fairly common problem especially
in a camera that has stood around a while.

You might try vigorously turning the compensation dial back and forth
many times, this often improves the contact, even if only temporarily.
If that seems to cure the problem, a CLA from John H. will undoubtedly
include cleaning of the ASA resistor.

Don't forget that, without a film in the gate, the actual shutter
speed in auto will always be longer than the indicated one, because
there is no reflectance from a film surface. (The shutter control
light sensing photodiodes "look" at the film surface when the shutter
is open).

Let's know what you find!
