[OM] OT: Problems with an Epson 850 printer

I've just posted this to the Epson mailing list, but thought there may be
someone on this list who may be able to help: OM content? Said picture file
taken with an OM4!

Having recently purchased relatively cheaply, an Epson 850 printer, minus
any cartridges, I bought the cheapest possible third party inks ("Colour
Jet", via Choice Stationery in the UK) to check initially whether the
printer worked or not. The intention in buying this printer being to
experiment with Lyson and/or Piezo B&W inks.

Having gone through the nozzle cleaning cycle/printing about 5 times, the
final print check showed the colour nozzles clear, the black nozzle almost.
It didn't look as if the nozzles had been cleared for a while. I also
checked the head alignment as well, which needed slight adjustment.

Some test prints (well the first one anyway) using black ink only on an RGB
B&W image, (printed to Epson Heavy Weight Matt paper) were, initially
surprising successful, giving a good contrast image with blacks better than
I have ever got using Epson inks. What's more there was NO colour cast. The
only downside at this stage was that the difference between 0 and 20 output
levels on the screen and on the print were hardly discernible. But this so
far was progress indeed. Printing the same file on the same paper on a 1290
on black ink only was no where near in terms of contrast or colour cast.

However, things could only get better. Or could they? Subsequent prints on
the 850 were marred by vertical (in portrait mode) ink lines on the rollers
(I think) but a clean around that area and the sponges (right technical
term?) seemed to solve this problem. A further test print was going fine
until horizontal RED lines appeared on the last third of the print, starting
outside the print area and extending right across the page.

Any thoughts/suggestions on this would be appreciated, plus what to use to
get ink of your fingers:-). Print settings on the 850 were RGB, 1440dpi,
microweave on, PCM ticked, black ink only.
