Yup... I remember when I got my first ever roll of black & white back, and
for some reason I had the crazy notion it would be cheaper than colour.
When they asked me for twice the amount I was expecting I rapidly went off
black & white!

Solutions - setting up your own darkroom is one (or using someone else's -
that's what I'm planning to start doing this coming year).  Another is to
use the 'chromogenic' films - Ilford XP-2, Kodak Portra BW and others, which
can be developed in C41 chemistry and printed on colour paper.  Usually you
get sepia or blue prints back, but the portra apparently prints in greyscale
on colour paper.  I'm a big fan of XP-2 - gives you sepia prints which I
really rather like, and it's got a great tonal range.
