Someone mentioned exotic weapons the monsters may have used.

Chances are they utilized what used to be called a 'CIA LETTER OPENER'.
Available at knife stores and cop shops across the country for less the $10.
Here one description from a website: This is the world's toughest letter
opener.
Made of fiberglass reinforced nylon, it weighs less than one ounce, but with
the
reinforcing ridges and blood groove to stiffen the blade, it can literally
be
hammered through a board.  The uses are limited only by your imagination;
self-defense to tent stakes. Measures 6-1/2 and weighs only 0.8 oz.
Made in the U. S. A.

(and obviously, undetectable by x-ray or metal detector - rb)
