: Your problem appears to have nothing to do with the scanner itself. The
: problem is that the system has yet to recognize the installation of the
: SCSI card. So, David's first question: Which OS? is very important.
: If it's Windows 95 then you should immediately head out to find an
: upgrade to Windows 98 or ME or Windows 2000 Professional. The
: recognition
: of the SCSI card is dependent on the Windows Plug and Play interface and
: is unlikely to work properly in Windows 95

The Plug and Play capabilities of Win98 SE aren't great either. During a
fresh installation it would just refuse to recognise my not-so-very-exotic
Adaptec AHA-2930CU PCI (supposed to be Plug & Play) SCSI controller and all
devices attached to it (except the harddisc! - the adapter is bootable).
Manually installing it from the built-in hardware list didn't work either.
The only thing that worked was to manually install and force it to look at
the supplied floppy disc with the driver. After this, it also recognized all
other SCSI devices (two scanners, CD-RW, Zip drive). So much for Plug and
Pray in Win95/98/98SE. Same story with the graphic adapter, btw.

I've had plenty of joy the last few weeks with at least half a dozen
attempts to install Office 2000 in Win98 SE. All attempts failed with either
a completely non-working Office, or (using a fresh install) a working Office
2000 but an unstable system after installing some additional software
(sometimes even resulting in a damaged FAT32 and a W*nd*ws being thrown back
12 steps back into its installation process...).

Finally, I gave up, and installed Windows 2000 Server. What a difference!
Almost all my hardware, including the SCSI adapter, two network adapter, the
graphic adapter and the Epson Stylus Photo printer, were recognised and
installed properly without one single interference by me! The Wacom tablet
and Logitech cordless keyboard were the only pieces of hardware that needed
to be added. And I had to search the Internet for a Windows NT/2000
compatible Twain driver for my old Trust 4800SP+ SCSI scanner because the
Win95 compatible driver wasn't even recognised.

Since then, my system hasn't crashed one, the eSIF CD's can be burnt again
without any problems and even Office 2000 still works. I only had to enforce
my firewall ZoneAlarm Pro with an additional installation of AnalogX
Portblocker because about every minute I got an entry attempt from the Code
Red virus which seems to have infected many computers on the UPC cable
network. Fortunately my Win2000 Server installation is immune to it - I'm
not running a webserver.
