Believe I mentioned some time ago that I had the opportunity in June to
photograph AirFest In Edmonton. Finally got an extra set of prints run (the
organizers kept the originals - and yes they specified prints) and had the
chance to scan a few. The airfield is the City Centre Airport located
virtually downtown Edmonton - hence the proximity to shopping and the skyline.

The highlight of the event were the RAF Harriers flown in from exercise
Maple Flag out at Cold Lake, Alberta. The pilots of the Harriers put on
quite a display both on arrival and departure. Part of the arrival sequence
was an opportunity for a lady who had been a pilot with the RAF WAAF during
WW2 to meet the pilots. Marie is now 80 but during the war she flew many
Spitfires from the factory to the various bases in England (she also flew
Ansons, Mosquitos, Hurricanes. Typhoons and many more). On one delivery she
arrived at the airfiled in her Spitfire (unarmed) just as the field was
attacked by ME109s. She was fortunate to get down in one piece albeit with
several holes in her shiny new Spitfire.

The pilots in the shots really aren't blonde - they had participated in a
charity event in Cold Lake the week before and had had their hair dyed
bright yellow as part of the fundraiser. Great pair of guys. Can't recall
the squadron but perhaps Chris B will recognize the patches.

Obligatory OM content. All shots done with OM-4 and either the 300/4.5 or
the 65-200/4. Beat the guys from the paper with their Nikon F5s -
especially on the landing sequences :-)
