It seems like I once read some photographer recommended that you have lenses
that were multiples of 1.8 (or some kind of factor) in mm to get decent
useful spread of lenses for money spent. Can anybody remember: 1. What that
multiple is? 2. Who said it? and probably most important 3. Is/was it viewed
as good advice or voodoo photography.

Like a lot of these rules people make up it has to be taken with a grain of salt. If you are standing in one place and the lens you are using does not quite capture the subject and you have to go to the next lens in your series, that ratio(1.8) would work. But things are just not that predictable and it assumes you cannot move to reframe the picture. It gives you the series of focal lengths(if you start at 21) 21, 35, 50, 90, 165(oops, maybe a 135 and a 200), 300(or should it be 1.8 x135 or 200?), and well it kind of breaks down. A more interesting way might to go more slowly, find out which are the really killer Oly lenses, get a couple of those and fill in the gaps where needed. You might even find that you like the images from a few of the really great lenses so much that you would rather move yourself closer or farther away rather that pick up the next lens in the series just because it is available.
